Maui November 2012

Stacy, Mitch, Nicole & Brandon went to Maui on November 2nd, 2012.
Nicole & Brandon flew from Denver. We met in LA and flew together to Kahului.

Nicole and Brandon leave the 13th and we leave the 16th.

We spent our time in the Marriott Ocean Club on Kaanapali Beach via time share trades. Our room was 4014.

We have done 9 dives so far, at Airport beach, Mala Ramp, Makena Landing, Black Rock (night dives) & took the Extended Horizons dive boat to Lanai and dove No Name Paradise and Cathedrals I.

These we Brandon's first ocean dives.

The weather has been outstanding. 82-84, Sunny, breezey. One slight shower while waiting at the Gazebo for breakfast one morning.

We did a drive all the way around the north side of the island and have spent time in Kihei as well. Everyone has been in good health and humor.

We are planning to drive a jeep to Hana as well. The jeep trop was awesome. Whole new deal driving a Jeep with the top off to Hana.

Delicious, but expensive breakfast at Longhi's in Lahaina. The toast, of all things, is a must have. Everything else is quality as well.

We have most of our own dive equipment. We have rented some weight and wet suits.

See video at: http://www.youtube.com/user/godfreymg?feature=guide
Have seen white tip reef sharks, turtles, frog fish, octopus, eels, lobster, shrimp, numerous fishes.

Kona May 9th - May 21st, 2012

Met Danny and Michelle on their graduation trip. They were able to come because Scott Shurtliff had access to a condo of a friend. He is here for six weeks and invited family to come over. Danny and Michelle were looking for something and jumped on it. Once they decided we took a while to figure out if we could come. We already had the Florida trip booked but decided it was a great chance to come. We were able to book a couple of time share trades after we had purchased plane tickets.

Round trip tickets from Salt Lake were about $850.

We stayed one night at Scotts condo with them. It was very noisy for Jessica sleeping on the front room couch so we booked an extra night at the Kona Coast resort at $100 (room 20-104) before our time share kicked in. We then transferred to room 9-103.

20-104 was in Kona Coast Resort phase II. One bedroom condo that was nice. The resort is a little older but well kept. We are here without an airconditioning option but opening windows and running fans works very well.

9-03 is in Kona Coast Phase I. It is older than the other room but is still very comfortable and even larger. Or is a two bedroom. Our only complaint is that it is dark with much less much less natural light. But it has a good floor plan made interesting with a sunken living room and master bath.

Day 1 May 9th travel - US Airways through Phoenix - Dollar Rent A Car - Night at Scott's apartment

Day 2 10th White sands beach / Michelle, Danny, Mitch shore dive. Difficult entry. More difficult exit. Lava tube with skylight. Moved to Kona Coast resort for the night. $100 for a 1 bedroom.

Day 3 11th Hapuna Beach State Park / Danny & Mitch dive at Puako Bay - Utility Pole 120 / Night Manta Dive / Dolphi's

Day 4 12th - Place of Refuge - Diving

Day 5 13th - Volcanos & Island Tour - Scott cooked dinner - Lots of beached Turtles

Day 6 14th - Downtown Shopping / Michelle & Danny leave/Afternoon Happy Hour Appetizers

Day 7 15th - White Sands Beach/Boogie Boarding - with Turtles/Snorkel-Jessica/Lunch with Scott

Day 8 16th - Sleep in recovery/Card writing/Slow day/Scott leaves / Mitch not feeling well

Apr 28 - May 5th 2012 West Palm Beach

Stacy and I travelled to West Palm Beach with Dennis and Susan Green. We stayed at the Marriott Oceana Palms, on Singer Island, in room 1173. The weather was raining and windy the first few days but improved as the week went on.

Apr 30th: Shore dove the Phil Foster Park Bridge. (See dive log for details, but this was a shallow dive with amazing amounts of sea life. Large schools of fish and everything from Peacock flounder to lobster)

May 2nd:  Purchased a full wet suit and Go Pro camera at diver Direct.

May 3rd: We took a trip to the Everglades May 3rd to Swamp Billies. Saw gators on the way there. Also saw them catch a live wild gator that had come to close to their boat dock.

May 4th: Dove with Little Deeper. Did Flower Garden and 5th Window. Dive crew was good. Boat was under stocked with weights. Did not provide a dive guide but had someone on board volunteer to do that.
Used Force E dive shop just over the bridge from Singer Island for local diving info and signed up there to do the dive with Little Deeper. They are good to work with. Bought a hood for warmth there.
Boat dives were $65 + tanks and any gear.
The owner of the Little Deeper knows Sean Payne that taught the kids on their certification.

Diving in Palm Beach is surprisingly good. It has the warm water of the Caribbean. The visibility is good. There is some coral and tons of fish life. It is mostly drift diving from boats.

Food: Had a really good dinner on Singer Island at the Sail Fish Marina. Everyone liked dinner. I had crazy good beer battered shrimp. Ended up going here again. Cheese Cake Factory was good. Little grocer on Singer Island, Grator Gator had a decent deli in the back.

Misc: Stacy got pretty sunburned early on because the day was overcast and windy and she didn't feel the burn coming on.

Why?

This site (started Father's Day 2010) is for listing Godfrey Family vacation memories (probably figured that out by now). It was started later in life so it is also for the purpose of recording new adventures and trying to recall and collect as much information as we can from earlier family trips.

It is intended to be fun but also to hold details to help planning future trips. So it may contain boring details such as room descriptions, prices, etc.
